Wye Oak, ‘Holy Holy’

mkatzif:

At one point this spring I was probably listening to Wye Oak’s record Civilian multiple times a day every day. It was perhaps a bit much, but it speaks to how great these songs are and how stunning the band is. One of my favorite songs, especially live in concert, is “Holy Holy.” Check out the new video, directed by Jeremy Johnstone.

The Walking Dead + Wye Oak

mkatzif:

AMC just put out a new promo for the upcoming second season of The Walking Dead, everyone’s favorite new apocalyptic zombie drama. Footage looks good, but gets even better once the sounds of Wye Oak’s “Civilian” creep into the soundtrack. Wye Oak and The Walking Dead, two of my favorite things — like bacon wrapped shrimp.

Hearing there was a new Walking Dead trailer got me excited. Hearing that somebody added Wye Oak’s sublime Civilian to the audio mix made me watch it immediately. We’ve crossed a new threshold in “dork”.

Video: Wye Oak Play Fallon - “Holy Holy”

Wye OakWye Oak made their national television debut tonight on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, unleashing Civilian cut “Holy Holy” for the masses. While Jenn Wasner unleashed a vocal-guitar rendition that was faithful to the record, drummer Andy Stack’s multi-dexterous keyboard and percussion skills caught the attention of Roots drummer ?uestlove: “@wyeoak’s drummer just topped billy ray cyrus’ drummer for most inventive performance on a late night show!” Watch Wye Oak rock Late Night above (via Audio Perv).

Hour 25 of no sleep.

This must be what getting no sleep is like.

I was awake for my night shift that I was on call for completely. And then my parents picked me up at roughly 0800 to come to Moscow and I thought for a brief moment “Hey! I’ll just sleep I the car!”

Needless to say, no actual sleeping in the car took place. I think I passed out for about five minutes somewhere between Boise and Weiser„ but it didn’t take. And I tried to read myself into a coma, but I got to talking to my parents about what I was reading and before I knew it we were at one of our planned stops. A half an hour into coffee and conversation later I was wide awake again. By this time we were within one hour of our destination and falling asleep was pointless…

*****

I’ve been reading Into the Wild and was struck by the wanderer who had inscribed “Nemo 1934” into the canyon rocks in Utah. How he kept pushing himself to his limits over and over again until he simply vanished. And then his marks vanished- through erosion, through entropy.

My existence is forever in doubt.

*****

10 PM, Pacific Time. Helping my brother paint pedestals with a fresh coat of white. Letting him have a victory I wish was mine; placing maps in a four by four grid on the far wall while Wye Oak plays “Holy Holy” over distant speakers. This is ephemeral and eternal. The hour hand creeps closer to hour 26 of my marathon sprint towards the sheets. I miss my wife and my boys and the safety of my house.

I keep pushing as if to test the limits of my existence. How far? How far? How far?

If Children Were Wishes

if children // wye oak

this song slays me. it’s a sad song. i’m not gonna lie. but i’m jealous i can’t write songs like this.

“if children were wishes, my mother spent hers on impossible things…”

hope i get to see them again live. they’re ah-mayze-ing.
